Proyecto Gol – San José, Costa Rica

Located in San José, Costa Rica, Proyecto Gol Costa Rica is the country's main high-performance football training center and the home of the Costa Rica National Teams across their different categories, under the management of the Costa Rican Football Federation.

It is at this iconic venue that we will have the great honor of welcoming the global WMFC family to the World Medical Football Championship 2026 – Costa Rica, sharing our passion for football, friendship, and the warm hospitality that defines our country.

The Legacy of Dr. Ferran Morell

In 1973, a pulmonologist from Barcelona had a simple idea: bring physicians together through football. That idea became Galens—a team of doctors who played, competed, and forged friendships that would change medical history forever.

From that foundation, Dr. Ferran Morell took a historic step: he founded and organized the first World Medical Football Championship (WMFC), held in Barcelona from 1995 to 2004. During this formative decade under his leadership, the WMFC drew medical teams from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, shaping a global community united by football and the practice of medicine.

His guiding philosophy — "when you play football with someone, you gain a friend for life" — became the enduring spirit of the tournament.

Dedications

This tournament is dedicated to two remarkable doctors who have left an indelible mark on the medical football community.

Dr. Ferran Morell Brotad

Founder of the World Medical Football Championship

Dr. Ferran Morell Brotad is the visionary founder of the World Medical Football Championship. A pulmonologist, Emeritus Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and leading authority at the Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca, Dr. Morell exemplifies scientific rigor, professional leadership, and unwavering dedication to health and medical education.

In 1973, he founded Galens, a football club composed exclusively of physicians, which became a symbol of unity and camaraderie. This inspired him to create the World Medical Football Championship in Barcelona in 1995—a revolutionary idea that today gathers thousands of physicians from more than 25 countries. His founding vision forever defined the spirit of the WMFC: "The main objective of the WMFC is not only to play football, but to gain friends."

Dr. Vladimir Salazar Rosa

Dr. Vladimir Salazar Rosa

In Memoriam (1975–2022)

Dr. Vladimir Salazar Rosa (1975–2022), affectionately known as Vladi, was a specialist in Internal Medicine and head of the Thrombosis Unit at the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Clinical Hospital in Murcia, Spain. He was a member of the international RIETE registry for venous thromboembolic disease since 2004 and founded his hospital's Thrombosis Unit in 2008, which became the first venous thromboembolic disease unit in Spain to earn advanced-level accreditation from the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine.

In January 2021, Vladi was diagnosed with colon cancer with liver and lung metastases. Rather than giving up, he transformed his own illness into a life project to help others, founding the Onco Sport Never Surrender Foundation—a pioneering initiative bringing physical exercise, especially supervised strength training, to cancer patients throughout the Region of Murcia. Dr. Salazar passed away at 47, but his message lives on: never surrender.

"Never Surrender"

— Dr. Vladimir Salazar's legacy lives on through his foundation and the spirit of resilience he embodied
